I am a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI), offering summer and winter mountaineering courses, summer rock climbing, snow and ice climbing coaching, instruction and guiding. Climbing and mountaineering activities constantly require decisions based assessment of one’s own skills and competence, others with you, the environment and the activity. I will help you to develop your mountain skills and decision making. If you are thinking of the perfect present why not consider a ‘Mountain Voucher’. Drop me a line and ask for a voucher for a mountain experience or a specific mountain skills course; your choice.
Mountains and adventure have always been part of my life. As a youngster I was inspired by climbing and mountaineering instructors, and 17 years in the Army, some of it as a Commando Engineer, provided me the opportunity to develop my passion and skills.
The outdoors offers many things: thrills, skills, experience, independence, confidence……….. However, it also offers time to think and relax. Let’s be honest, we all need that at the moment. I am a person with experience and wisdom from lots of adventures!

Hill Walking – Scotland offers some of the most diverse and stunning walking… well, anywhere. From the dramatic and at times pretty remote North West, to the ever popular Munros of Lochaber and the Cairngorms, there is lots to see and do. Whether you aspire to being a Mountain Leader or just gain skills and confidence, hill training will cover essentials such as planning, route selection, equipment, navigation and emergencies to support your journey. Rock Climbing – Scotland is home to some of the oldest rocks in the world. We have granites, volcanic rocks and a huge variety of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks as well as ancient sandstone – from when Scotland was somewhere warmer! Look at any climbing guidebook and you will see a fabulous array of climbing opportunities. Learn to climb, progress to leading or enjoy the journey! Click here for prices.
Summer Mountaineering – Somewhere between hill walking and rock climbing is scrambling, the world where rope skills and protecting oneself is essential. Perhaps the rope stays warm and dry in a sack, conditions though on a committing route such as the Aonach Eagach Ridge in Glencoe can change quickly and having the confidence to set up a basic belay and safeguard oneself and others is an essential skill. Join me to learn essential skills and develop your confidence and independence. Click here for prices.
Winter Skills – It does not matter how many years you have been enjoying the winter mountains, we all still get a thrill when the first snow arrives. But it does take knowledge, equipment, skills and judgement. On a winter skills course over two or five days you will develop the skills and confidence to plan and enjoy a trek over the stunning Scottish winter hills. Click here for prices.
Winter Mountaineering – Some easier summer scramble routes offer fantastic sport, but need some more equipment such as helmet, harness and a rope along with some rock and ice protection. Routes may be slightly more challenging than walking routes and an axe may be used more on ascent over low grade snow, rock and icy ground. I will help you to develop your winter mountaineering decision making process and skills. Click here for prices.
Winter Climbing – Scotland offers some of the most exiting, varied and accessible winter climbing in the world. The sun may not always be shining, but when it is, that is the icing on the cake. In 30 years of winter climbing and mountaineering and adventures I have learnt a few lessons! I will help you to develop your decision making process. Some of my best decisions – have involved changing to ‘Plan B’! Climb some of the classic gullies, ice or mixed routes with a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and take away a whole heap of experience and some new or tuned skills. Hill Running – okay, so it’s not everyone’s scene, but I enjoy going fast and light over and through the hills. Whether lightweight backpacking or hill running. I have competed in 20 mountain marathons (15 OMMs) and the Glencoe Skyline race twice. Join me to develop your ability to select the right route, gear and make the right decisions when travelling light. Click here for prices.
